The advent of electric light, and later digital technologies, has progressively disconnected us from the consequences of our actions. While providing convenience and instant gratification, these innovations have obscured the environmental and social costs of our energy consumption and digital engagement. The "vibe generation," fueled by social media algorithms and geo-tagging, seeks picture-perfect experiences in fragile ecosystems, often oblivious to the negative impacts of their presence. This phenomenon of "exponentialism" leads to rapid growth and disruption in once-pristine locations, mirroring the "move fast and break things" mentality of tech hubs like San Francisco. As digital tools like Instagram and Airbnb are here to stay, we must learn to use them responsibly, becoming more aware of local cultures and infrastructure limitations in the places we visit. The challenge lies in reconnecting the dots between our actions and their consequences, a task that technology alone cannot accomplish. We must strive to bridge this disconnect, using our unprecedented access to information to foster more responsible and sustainable behaviors.
